About the Artwork
“Oceans Over Oil” is a thought-provoking fiber art and video installation by @plastikkembali that confronts the profound environmental crisis caused by the oil industry, particularly its impact on marine ecosystems.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is an abstract fiber art piece representing a coral reef, crafted from recycled plastic and waste textile — materials derived from petrochemicals, symbolizing the very issue at hand.
The artwork has further been doused in thick black paint representing oil and petrochemicals — the building blocks of 99.99% of plastics in our world and a core culprit in climate change.
As viewers engage with the video and artwork, they witness a dramatic transformation: a visceral act serving as a powerful metaphor for the destructive effects of oil spills, runoff, pollution and climate change, illustrating how the oil industry is slowly suffocating our oceans.
Through this immersive experience, Plastik Kembali invites viewers to confront the truth about our relationship with fossil fuels and to consider the collective responsibility we share in safeguarding our planet’s future.
Why choose to protect “Oceans Over Oil”?
With current statistics citing that 84% of our global coral reefs have suffered some level of bleaching caused by climate change, Plastik Kembali asks the question: with proven oil reserves only allowing for an estimated 50 to 100 years-worth of supply (at current usage), why do we continue to support a dying industry that is literally killing our planet? When will we truly make the concerted effort to shift to renewable energy and plastic alternatives? What will it actually take for us to change?
